Oh Alexa, how do I love thy…

…let me count the ways. My first Alexa shoot and I’m super pleased. The footage looks wonderful. Working with the camera is a breeze. Menu structure is just robust enough but not suffocating. While I’ve seen the camera before, I was still surprised at how small it is, not Red Epic small, but small or at least smaller than I remembered.

We ended up shooting ProRes 422 HQ in Rec. 709 for the bulk of the footage. For the few FX shots we used ProRes 4444 also in Rec. 709. Would have like to have shot Log C, but the accelerated editorial necessitated shooting in Rec. 709.

The project was for Blair Underwood’s new line of men’s suits – the BU Collection. Can’t wait for the spot to be available to share.

I want to thank the amazing crew we had led by Gaffer Josh Day and Key Grip Dwight Stone. Thank you gents! Also want to thank our amazing Steadi-Cam operators, Justin B.! One of the best I’ve worked with. Look forward to doing it all again very soon.

↑ I love this photo! From left to right: Justin B. (Steadi-Cam), James D. (2nd AC), Koji K. (1st AC) and Blair Underwood as he gets final touch-ups. Great suit!

Alexa thoughts…

I have a commercial coming up and we’re gonna shoot with the Arri Alexa (at least that’s the decision as of this weekend).  Curious to hear anyone’s thoughts, comments, concerns about the camera.

The commercial is for Blair Underwood who is introducing a new line of menswear suits.

It’s that time of year again…

…DORITOS SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL CONTEST TIME! I’ve shot my first.  Can’t wait to post it or link it.  Miles Crawford – whom I’ve worked with on music videos – directed this funny spot.  I’ll post a link once it’s up and you’ll have a chance to vote a million times for it to help us for the win.  Thanks in advance for doing that.

Side note:  Miles is participating in Movember again this year. If you can donate to this worthy cause, please do.  CLICK HERE.

Stuff I did is now online

Director David Green just put up a slew of projects he and I worked on together.

“Meltdown” (on Funny or Die & Vimeo)
Meltdown made it to the to front page of Digg.com and became a “Staff Pick” on Vimeo.com on the day David debuted it online.  I’ve posted plenty of times the awards this project has received since we made it but I’m especially proud of the numerous Audience Choice awards it’s won here in the US and as far away as South Korea.  Now, you too can finally see it in it’s entirety.  This was our first project together and my first with the third member of our triumvirate, Producer Ryan Hendricks.  In recent day’s it’s gotten a slew of press.  Watch and enjoy.

Crash the Super Bowl

Just finished shooting a spec commercial for a contest called Crash the Super Bowl, sponsored by Dorirtos and Pepsi Max.  The spot is directed by Ryan Barton-Grimley and features Aaron Schneider as our misguided romantic. We shot the spot with the Canon 5D and a 24-70mm T2.8 Sigma lens. Lighting consisted of a mix of tungsten units and Kino Flo lights.

It’s surpassed 3000 views – not bad considering the deluge of entries. The comments have been overwhelmingly positive.  Thank you to all the nice peps who commented – especially when it says how well it was shot!  Please win or I’m switching to Coca~Cola.  Oh and tell a friend.

Click to watch – after the contest, I’ll post the video here and on my demo page.

Frame-grab from the video.

Time Warner Cable Commecial

Just finished a series of commercials for Time Warner Cable. I finally got to put a RED ONE with the new MX sensor through its paces under varied settings. Verdict… Loves it. I love the 800 ISO (except when outside). Inside though, being able to easily shoot at stops like ƒ2.5 to ƒ4.0 is so much better than struggling and fighting to get enough light at ƒ1.4 with an 80 ISO (like when using an HVX200 with a Letus lens adaptor). Outside continues to be a conundrum. Still having problems with IR contamination even with my Schneider Tru-Cut IR – it just doesn’t cut deep enough into the IR. I guess I’ll finally bite the bullet and purchase a Pancro IR filter, most likely as a neutral density (ND) combo. I think the ND1.2 would be a good choice since that’s the level of ND that starts to show IR contamination. Beyond that, I can stack additional ND as needed and below that I don’t need the IR filter. But $450 buck… ouch! Aside from that, I really felt like I got my groove on with shooting the MX sensor. After six days of shooting with it, I miss shooting and being on set now that it’s over.

One downside of the shoot and a lesson learned (besides the IR issue)… If you’re getting a deal on the lenses, check them thoroughly. We got a set of Zeiss lenses that used 3 aperture blades. What’s the big deal? Well, the bokeh looks like tiny pyramids in the background. What to do next time? Make sure there’s at least five blades (or better yet, lenses with at nine). I’ll take the Pentagon over the Luxor any day.

Had a great and fun crew to work with and I thank them all for all the hard work they put into making a great week of shooting. Till next time.

Chumash Casino

Just finished a video for the Chumash Casino Restort and Next Movement Entertainment. It’s the video that plays in the hotel room television and features the amenities the hotel and casino offers. I think what I like best about what we did is give it a cinematic look. There’s that and the fact that we shot lots of food related segments. Can’t wait to see the video finished.

Time Warner Cable – commercial

Just finished a set of commercials for Time Warner Cable. I’m pleased to announce that six of the eleven spots director Tony Hope and I shot have tested very well and are going national. I’ll post more soon when I can find the time. Great job everyone who worked one them!!!

Merle Norman – product shots

I got to shoot some product shots for Merle Norman cosmetics and director Greg McDonald. We shot using the Red One, a Skater Mini dolly and the InnoVision lens system, Probe II Plus. The set for our products was a black laminated platform with one inch walls all around to keep a pool of water and a matte black cyc back wall. For only being 6′x4′, the pool took nearly 20 gallon’s of water which works out to be 166 lbs. of water! (8.35 lbs. per gallon). It looked beautiful when you can see the reflection in the pool or when the water is disturbed and seeing the ripple in the mirror image. We also took some shots without the water and placed a matte black floor. Great looking stuff.

“Yo soy TWC” – commercials

Strong beginning to the year so far. This week I start shooting another set of commercials with Director Tony Hope for Time Warner Cable as part of their “I Am Time Warner Cable” campaign. This time, it’s en Español, Olé! Like the previous spots, we’re shooting with the Panasonic HVX200 and the Letus35 lens adapter. Unlike last time in which we used still photography lenses (Nikon in particular), this time we’re using the PL mount lens adaptor with Zeiss Planor T1.3 lenses in focal lengths of 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm. The folks at Alan Gordon have machined parts to make the system work with rods for follow focus and a matte box. More to report later in the week.

“Fridge” – short film

What a wonderful way to end the year and start a new one, doing a project I’m enthusiastic about. The project is called “Fridge” and it’s directed by David Green and produced by Ryan Hendricks. “Fridge” tells the story of a community of refrigerator inhabitants and their valiant and noble struggle against a mortal foe – a baleful and metastatic ice that threatens to enshrine them if they don’t act quickly.

The bulk of the movie takes place inside a diminutive refrigerator. Shots we couldn’t get with the real fridge were shot using a small “set”.  It should be noted that all our little “actors” are being puppeteered by either Ryan or David with me lending a hand on a rare occasion to work the wires.  Also, since someone asked, this project isn’t stop action.

To light our little actors, we used a large array of LED “throwies” (see image below for more notes). We’re in the middle of shooting right now – I’ll add more in next year’s blog.

Sailing, Sailing, Ov'r the Bounding Main…

Hey all. I’ll be out of reach for the next few days while I shoot a promotional spot on an aircraft carrier. If you need to reach me, well you likely can’t. I don’t know if I’ll have internet access and much less cellular service while somewhere in the Pacific. If you do need to reach me, your best bet will be by email but don’t expect an answer before Wednesday evening. Wish me luck – I’m bringing my water-wings just in case!

P1000031.JPG

Update:

OK maybe not… I’ll know more later today.

Update 2:

So it seems we’re back on. See you all after Wednesday.

Update n:

Ahoy there matey. It’s off again. The “why” doesn’t matter – at least not now. So maybe in a couple weeks I’ll get my chance to land on a carrier by an arresting cable or being catapulted off. Next time swabbie.

greenwala.com

Just finished a set of spots for greenwala.com and produced by Jeff Cole Productions. The spots were directed by Clay and are a parody of the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” spots. In our case it’s Hybrid vs. SUV and Locally Grown O Delauney rganic Tomato vs. Mass Produced Tomato. Funny stuff. Should be done very soon.

TIme Warner Cable commercials

21 Oct 2008:

I got word today that the spots are all but finished. We’re doing the color correction for the remanding five spots next week. Can’t wait to share the final spots and can’t wait till they’re all on the air. Bully!

13 Oct 2008:

I just finished a series of commercials for director Tony Hope. The spots are for Time Warner Cable and are called “I Am Time Warner Cable”. It’s been a while since I’ve done spots with them. A couple of years ago Comcast and Time Warner Cable purchased and divided a great deal of Adelphia Cable territory and at the time decided to outsource most of their commercial work. That may be changing back with these six spots. Here are some pictures from the shoot. I’ll be posting the spots as they become available to me.

Really dude! Bluescreen day

I Am TWC - location day 2 - 10 I Am TWC - location day 2 - 14

I love sliders, I really do. I’m not talking about burgers (although I love them too). The slider I’m talking about there is a 24″ sliding camera support platform. Here we needed to shoot some shots with minor movement – perfect tool, although not very pretty. Just say no to 1/3″ DOF. We used a Letus35 with Nikon lenses. She looks great and the shot is so much the better for it.

I Am TWC - location days - 14 I Am TWC - location day 2 - 09

Here we did a shot that goes from a TV screen, along an outstretched arm holding a remote, to finish on an over-the-shoulder, two-shot of folks on a couch watching the TV. We needed to under-sling the camera and the jib helped us reach out over the couch as we dollied back to the final mark. Great shot! Me and the camera. Proof I was there.

I Am TWC - week 1 - 15

Clay Delauney (cam op) ready to do a “Steadicam like” shot. This rig and our experience level with it made it less than perfect but its imperfection made the shot work.

We shot a day on a white cyc. These shots will be black & white. We had to pick-up some of the black & white shots in an office. Surprisingly it worked just fine.

I haven’t had much going on much less time to write recently.  But here’s a bit of something worth writing about.  This week I’m shooting a commercial for my friend’s company, Next Movement Entertainment.  It’s for a professional association looking to inspire college age kids to pursue careers in engineering and land surveying.

I’ll write more later, must sleep now…

"BargainPays.com" commercial is done

In December I shot a commercial for BargainPays.com and directed by Justin Viar.  It’s a fantastic and fun spot.  We used the Panasonic HVX200 and while we did have an M2 lens adaptor, we chose to not use it.  It proved to be a bit clunky given our situation.  I am looking forward to using the M2 in the future and under different circumstances.  The project required motion tracking so you’ll see little green dots on the clothing in the images below.  The dots connected a virtual price tag added in post and then painted out.  I think it worked swimmingly.
