pCam is now available on iPhone…

pCam (and its sister app, pCine) are programs used for common cinematography calculations originally created for the Palm PDA platform. The apps are used to calculate depth-of-field, field-of-view, exposure, diopter and macro, underwater, time-lapse and screen time and so, so much more. I LOVE these programs!! I’ve been hanging on to my Handspring Visor for I don’t know how long because it still has by passwords for when I originally purchased both pCam and pCine. On my computer, I’ve been running a barely functional Palm emulator just so I can use the software when I’m doing pre-production planning. I know people, who despite not wanting a Palm phone, have gotten one just to run this software! That’s how deep the love runs.

Now available for the iPhone, pCam combines both apps. It’s created and distributed by David Eubank, a 1st Camera Assistant here in the Los Angeles area. Given the fact that I’ve been using several different apps on my iPhone, now I fell like Forrest Gump when he got the news he won’t have to worry about money any more… “That’s good. One less thing!”

Visit the iTunes store to get it. Many thanks to David for making this software.

Merle Norman – product shots

e. gustavo | commercial, tech tips | Thursday, March 26th, 2009

I got to shoot some product shots for Merle Norman cosmetics and director Greg McDonald. We shot using the Red One, a Skater Mini dolly and the InnoVision lens system, Probe II Plus. The set for our products was a black laminated platform with one inch walls all around to keep a pool of water and a matte black cyc back wall. For only being 6′x4′, the pool took nearly 20 gallon’s of water which works out to be 166 lbs. of water! (8.35 lbs. per gallon). It looked beautiful when you can see the reflection in the pool or when the water is disturbed and seeing the ripple in the mirror image. We also took some shots without the water and placed a matte black floor. Great looking stuff.

↑ Our Red camera fully equipped. Here we’re shooting in “the pool”.
→ Reviewing the shot with Koji (1st AC).

“Rust” – feature film – production

e. gustavo | narrative | Monday, March 2nd, 2009

I’ve been back a couple of weeks now, fully re-acclimated and quite over hearing the joke “are you thawed out yet?”! I finally found time to sit down and finish jotting down my thoughts, remembrances, impressions, notes, and observations.

While in the land of Canada, I kept a daily journal and what follows are some of the key points from each day while I was there. With a broad stroke let me offer this from the top. It’s good to be back – back with my wife, my dog, my friends, things, and my city. No lie, I do miss the new friends I’ve made and think (or at the very least, hope) that it won’t be long before I see them again.

WEEK ONE:

7 Feb 09: Today is a big day! It’s our first day of shooting. Arrived at the farmhouse about two hours ahead of our initial burn. The plan for the day was to burn a house. You read right, burn a house. AWESOME!

Rust-Prod-D00 - 012 Rust-Prod-D00 - 021
↑ View of the farm house from the road.
→ Art Department and firefighters build the pyre. It was build between the house and the tree line windbreak. From the road, it looked like the house was on fire from the ground up.

Rust-Prod-D00 - 052 Rust-Prod-D00 - 055
↑ Michael (1st AC) gets the camera ready.
→ Ready for the cold.

Rust-Prod-D00 - 068
↑ This was a solemn moment. A local pastor prays before the house goes up.

Rust-Prod-D00 - 085 Rust-Prod-D00 - 107
→ There she goes.

Rust-Prod-D00 - 114
↑ The camera didn’t want to behave under the cold conditions. Once the fire got going, so did the camera as the space around the house heated up.

8 Feb 09: Film school crash course today. The producers, the 1st AD and myself demonstrated for some of our actors who haven’t been on camera before what to expected on set. We went over all the calls, floor marks, etiquette, etc.

9 Feb 09: Need to eat more greens! Electrical department stuck in Winnipeg – snow storm.

10 Feb 09: The official Day One of principle photography and I hear it’s a snow fall. In fact, I hear it’s the worst one in a decade.  So More roads closed and Corbin drives in today from Regina.

Rust-Prod-D01 - 14 Rust-Prod-D01 - 22
↑ Chris A. (Prod) can be an angel some of the time.
→ Our ride in and out of this location get stuck in the snow.

Rust-Prod-day_off_02 - 046 Rust-Prod-day_off_02 - 081
